What Kind of Harvest Are You Reaping?

August 26, 2011

Be aware of the type of seeds you are planting in your Christian marriage!  There are ultimately 2 choices:

1. You can plant good seeds in your marriage.

2. You can plant bad seeds in your marriage.

However, there is one common effect no matter what type of seeds we choose to sow:  We can expect that it will multiply and bring forth a harvest.

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” Galatians 6:7

Whenever I visit a city where homeless people are present around me, if I have money, I usually give them a few dollars.  I started giving money to people less fortunate than me when I was in college.  My husband  and I attended two different colleges approximately 2 hours driving distance apart.  On the weekends, he would pick me up and take me to his school.  The area just outside his school was full of homeless people.

I always felt sad inside when I would see them, so I would make him give them some money.  Being college students ourselves, you can imagine we did not have much money, but I still felt that we were blessed enough to lend a hand when possible.  We have never had a ton of money, but we have never gone hungry either.

Now fast forward a few years….

My husband was laid off from his job this past February.  We had to adapt and make a few changes to our lifestyle.  Even though we are working with half the income we once brought into the family.  Our cabinets, refrigerator, and deep freezer remain full of food.  How is that possible?  I believe that because we have always tried to be a blessing to those less fortunate than us, the Lord is surely watching over us in our time of need as well.

What kind of seeds are you planting in your Christian marriage? If you sow good seeds in your Christian marriage, you will reap good seeds.  If you are dealing with the consequences of planting bad seeds, understand that you do not have to continue reaping a bad harvest.  If you change what you are sowing, you will reap a different harvest.

God will not release us from the consequences of our past actions, but He will be there with us as we deal with them.  How else will we truly learn that we need to change what we are doing unless we suffer the consequences of the choices we make in life?  God cares so much about us that he gives us a warning,  “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows” Galatians 6:7 After he gives us this warning, he allows us to make our own decisions and to enjoy the benefits or suffer the consequences of those choices.  Now that is tough love!

Challenge:  Evaluate your Christian marriage, do you desire to reap a different harvest?  If so, write out exactly what harvest you would like to see in the future.  Now take a step back and determine what changes might be necessary in your attitude, daily schedule, or otherwise to achieve the desired harvest.  Decide to take action on these items today!
