The Truth About Divorce, Getting Remarried, and Affairs!

March 30, 2012

I hesitate to write on  topics such as divorce, getting remarried and affairs,  because people are not interested in the truth anymore.  We have become more concerned with hearing things that make us feel better about the choices we have made or are going to make rather than the truth.  The bible tells us that this is exactly how the world will be when Jesus returns.

1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—2 Timothy 3:1-4

However, I must be obedient to  God and share with you the concerns he has given me. It is becoming very hard to distinguish between Christian marriages and  secular marriages.  And yet, we are instructed to be different from the world.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2

Divorce,  getting remarried and affairs have taken over families across the country.   Why?  I believed the reason for this is due to the fact that we want our cake and we want to eat it too.   I have read blogs from fellow Christian bloggers who believe that God does not mind divorce.  Let’s deal with the truth , not as I see it but  the truth about God’s feelings on it all.

Divorce:

10 To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11 But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife. 1 Corinthians 7:10-11

What We All Forget About Christian Marriage Vows is that we are making an oath first to the Lord and then each other. When we get a divorce we are breaking the oath we made to the Lord and our spouse.

Getting Remarried:

18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Luke 16:18

In the scripture verse above the bible tells us that if we remarry we commit adultery.  Does that sound like God is approving divorce? Does it sound like he is in favor of getting remarried?

Adultery/ Affairs:

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” Hebrews 13:4

In a previous post, I offered tips on ways to prevent an affair or how to stop an affair.  Now that we know how God feels about it all, what can we do to make sure that we keep the vows we have made to Him and our spouse? In proverbs 5:15-21 we read the best advice ever given for preventing a divorce, getting  remarried, and affair.

Drink water from your own cistern,
running water from your own well.
16 Should your springs overflow in the streets,
your streams of water in the public squares?
17 Let them be yours alone,
never to be shared with strangers.
18 May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 A loving doe, a graceful deer—
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s
wife?
Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

21 For your ways are in full view of the LORD,
and he examines all your paths.

My post today is not to condemn others it is simply to reveal the truth, as revealed in the bible.   “Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

Challenge:  Are you more concerned about what you want or how you can be the best Christian ( Christ- like) you can be? As Christians we are called to  ” live a life worthy of the calling you have received.” Ephesians 4: 1  When we seek to obey God in our marriage our marriage becomes a ministry by which we can bring others to Christ, our ultimate calling.
