“14 Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” Romans 13:14 This Scripture brings up a very important question to each of us Christians.
Do you reflect Jesus on a daily basis?
When we “put on” the Lord Jesus Christ, we are deciding to be more like Him and less like our flesh. As we seek to improve our Christian marriage, we learn through the Bible the way we must treat one another. Throughout the Bible we read scripture that is constantly telling us to deny our flesh and behave as Christ would in every situation. We even have tangible items like a bracelet that reads WWJD, to remind us how to interact within our Christian marriage and to others. As Christians, we have a pretty good idea how we should treat one another and as long as we are doing well, we treat others the way God would treat them.
How do we defeat our flesh when we could care less about the way someone else feels? You know, when we have our own problems to worry about. How do we treat people the way Christ would treat them in mist of our trials and tribulations? Here are 7 ways to improve the quality of your marriage while becoming more like Christ:
1. Read the bible– the bible is the most efficient way to learn about God and to learn how to treat his people. Through the bible we see Christ’s character, learn about His commands, and the consequences for disobeying him.
2. Pray– when we pray we are speaking directly to our heavenly father. Praying also allows the holy spirit to speak back to us.
3. Surround yourself with other Christians– Being around people who are going in the same the direction will be encouraging when you are spiritually weak. It is interesting how Christians are never spiritually weak at the same time, when you need to be encouraged they can offer a word of wisdom.
4. Set a daily routine to praise God– I read a sign that said ” Make good habits, they are just as hard to break as the bad ones!” This statement is very true. If you set a routine of spending time with the Lord, it will become second nature to praise him even when times are rough.
5. Spread the gospel– When we want to lose weight, professional trainers often advice that we verbal express our goals to others. When we tell other people our goals we feel pressure to accomplish them. If you tell others you are a Christian you will become more aware of your behavior and chances are you will try your best to represent God.
6. Do good– Helping others often improves our attitude as well, and in return we will reflect God’s love to others.
7. Fake it– There will be a time when we are over burdened by our trials but the bible commands us to “Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” Romans 13:14 That means we must choose to be like Christ. Why is this important? Because when we say we are Christians we are being watched. We must represent God well so that others may desire to follow him too.
Challenge: The key to having a better Christian marriage is to become more like Jesus Christ. Decide today that regardless of the way your spouse is treating you, you will “put on” the holy spirit by applying the 7 tips above.
