The Lord God said, ” It is not good for the man to be alone, I will create a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18
If our role as a wife within our Christian Marriage is not submission, then what is our role? Listed below are three roles we were intended to perform.
1. Helper (Genesis2:18)- God’s designs for marriage was meant to make both of our lives easier (Ecclesiastes 4:9), by dividing the work load. The lord intended for the woman to care for the affairs of the household (Proverbs 31:27). In Genesis, God explained how hard the husband would have to work outside of the home (Genesis3:17-19) and we are expected to work just as hard within the home (Proverbs 31:10-31).
2. Reproduce (Genesis 1:28)- The first command from God for the married couple, was to have children. To be able to have children is a blessing from God (Psalms 127:3) A few of us have forgotten that God commands us to have children, it was never meant to be an option. Somewhere we have lost sight of why we are here. Please do not misunderstand me, I am not saying that woman cannot or should not work. I am simply saying that our decision to not have kids because we want to work was never God’s perfect will for us (married followers of Christ). The ability to have children is God’s gift to us his people(James 1:17). When we decide that we do not want any more children we are essentially saying, Lord I do not want anymore gifts from you.
3. Reflect God on Earth (Ephesians 1:12)- Our Christian marriage is a visual of God’s relationship with us. When we understand our role as wives and seek to perform it, we demonstrate how effective our heavenly father’s plan is. The world has their own plan, and as we can see it’s not working. The only plan that will ultimately work, is God’s. He wants to save as many people as possible. However, he has given us all a free will to accept or reject him, so he is depending on us to show the world how great following him can be.
Challenge: Ask your husband, how you can make his life easier. Tell him you realize now that the two of you can only reach your best potential when you work together as a team. Write down some goals for the rest of the year, and decide the best way that the two of you can reach them.
